Zusammenfassung

The Routledge Handbook of Crusade Texts, Images, and Artefacts presents a diverse array of "entry point" chapters, commissioned from an international group of experts at the forefront of their respective subfields, which together offer the reader a way in to the modern study of materials relating to the medieval crusades.

It traces recent methodological, conceptual, and disciplinary revolutions in the way that scholars approach such materials, and responds to a field in flux: where vastly more "texts" (broadly defined) are now being unearthed, edited, translated, and otherwise made available to ever wider audiences, and where radical new perspectives and insights are emerging from a dynamic and growing field of scholarship. Studies of iconography, manuscript transmission, and preaching materials sit alongside those on historical writing in the Levant, memories of anti-Jewish violence in the Rhineland, and Middle High German lyric in this wide-ranging volume.

Both experienced researchers and students new to the field will benefit from this collection of recent overviews to support their own research, and medievalists of all kinds will find the mix of "state-of-the-field" synopses, illustrative case studies, and interventions into historiographical debate, rewarding and insightful.

Simon Thomas Parsons is Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom. His work focuses on medieval history writing, the chansons de geste, textual representations of gender norms, and the crusading movement in the Central Middle Ages. He has written a range of articles for journals including English Historical Review, Crusades, and Haskins Society Journal (for which he won the Bethell Prize in 2018). His monograph, The First Crusade: Text and Tradition, is forthcoming in 2027. With Linda Paterson, he has co-edited Literature of the Crusades (2018).

Linda M. Paterson is Professor Emerita at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. Her books include Troubadours and Eloquence (1975), The World of the Troubadours: Medieval Occitan Society, c.1100-c.1300 (1993), The Canso d'Antioca: An Epic Chronicle of the First Crusade, with C. Sweetenham (2003), Marcabru: A Critical Edition, with S. Gaunt, R. Harvey, and L. Paterson, and J. Marshall (2000), Culture and Society in Medieval Occitania (2011), Singing the Crusades: French and Occitan Lyric Responses to the Crusading Movement, 1137-1336 (2018), The Troubadour Tensos and Partimens, with R. Harvey (2010), and The Troubadours (2024).
