Zusammenfassung

Using Marxist perspectives to analyse the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics, and pandemics more broadly, this volume provides an illuminating look at how social structures and processes affect public health.

Drawing from historical sources, epidemiology, the social sciences, public health, and clinical knowledge about infectious diseases, the authors approach the topic through a multidisciplinary lens and seek to address the development of disease within the body over time, key aspects of virology, and how socially-induced changes in face-to-face social networks and niches of high viral transmission can shape viral evolution and thus also shape the potential for viruses to become more infectious and more virulent. Sufficient time has now passed since the initial shock of both epidemics to allow for a deeper consideration of broader issues than those addressed in earlier studies. Rather than universalize the behavioural aspects of transmission between two people, the authors' holistic look at these prevailing phenomena draws attention to the roles of social structures and processes in the emergence and proliferation of infections.

Scholars and students across the social sciences and humanities with an interest in infectious diseases and pandemics will find valuable insight in this book, as will public health scholars, practitioners, and activists who are concerned about the social and political conditions affecting their work and general well-being.

Samuel R. Friedman is a Research Professor and a faculty member at the Center for Opioid Epidemiology and Policy in the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

David C. Perlman is a physician-researcher based in New York City. He has worked at the interface of infectious diseases and substance use medicine and epidemiology to conduct transdisciplinary research in support of, and has been actively involved in efforts, to bring equitable healthcare and prevention to oppressed communities.

Ashly Vigneault is a social scientist and epidemiologist. Her work is grounded in principles of social justice and is focused at the interface of substance use, infectious diseases and social and economic inequalities. She has participated in social and economic activism, including in the feminist struggle, since the 1990s.

Georgios Nikolopoulos is an epidemiologist and public health academic at the University of Cyprus Medical School. His work spans infectious disease epidemiology, HIV and hepatitis, epidemic and pandemic response, disease surveillance, evidence synthesis, and health policy. His research focuses on strengthening public health systems and translating epidemiological evidence into policy and practice.

Diana Rossi is Social Worker and Specialist in youngsters' social problems. She was professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires. She was one of the founders of the Argentinean NGO Intercambios Civil Association. She led and participated in multiple investigations on HIV and people who use drugs.
