In this work, Dr. Hossein Behzadi Andoujerdy examines satire, the causes and circumstances behind its emergence, and its role and influence. He also provides definitions of humor, lampoon, and related forms, while exploring various manifestations of satire and satirical writing in Iran.
In defining satire, he notes: "Satire is a particular way of expressing sharp social, critical, and political ideas, and of exposing bitter and repulsive truths arising from corruption and violations of social norms by individuals or society-truths that, if discussed openly or seriously, may be prohibited or impossible to express. Such truths are therefore presented through mockery and ridicule, with the aim of rejecting and uprooting corruption and wrongdoing. In simpler terms, satire may be defined as criticism and observation blended with ridicule."
The first chapter provides definitions of satire and discusses its purposes, while explaining its differences from humor and lampooning. It also examines the relationship between satire and sociology, psychology, ethics, and history. The chapter introduces the fundamental elements of satire as well as several rhetorical devices that serve satirical expression. In addition, it presents numerous satirical anecdotes under themes such as "Satire and Religion," "Satire and Reason," "Sufi Satire," and "Popular Satire," among others.
The second chapter is devoted to humor and its principal elements, along with a selection of humorous anecdotes. The third chapter discusses the definitions of lampoon and denunciation, their meanings and concepts, and the psychological and social foundations underlying them.
