Zusammenfassung

"Barton weaves personal tragedy and global upheaval into a powerful testament to the human spirit."-Joyce Turner, Social Activist, Consultant, former Field Representative CWS

"Jonathan Miller Barton's A View from an Adirondack Chair is a deeply reflective memoir that blends personal history, spiritual exploration, and social commentary into a cohesive narrative about what it means to live a thoughtful, examined life."-Marylin Mecham, Executive Director, Mentor Foundation

In March 2020, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Barton was hospitalized and facing an unknown future. Looking back on his life, he found himself thinking about ministry, social justice, and the importance of understanding one's roots and how they contribute to our personal identity. From those anxious weeks, this book was born.

In A View from an Adirondack Chair, Dr. Barton intertwines personal anecdotes with the broader themes of faith, forgiveness, resilience, service, and community, emphasizing the importance of a grateful life. He poignantly reflects on the loss of his wife and daughter, exploring the profound impact of grief on one's spiritual journey and providing insight into how individuals can navigate loss while finding hope. Ultimately, the text invites readers to find purpose amid life's challenges, fostering a deeper connection with themselves, others, and the divine.

Jonathan Miller Barton served as associate regional director and regional director for seventeen years with Church World Service and eighteen years as general minister for the Virginia Council of Churches. He trained in psychology at Kean University and received a master of divinity degree from Drew Theological Seminary and a doctor of ministry degree at the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology, Virginia Union University. He was ordained by the Presbyterian Church USA to the position of hunger action enabler for three presbyteries and has traveled extensively on behalf of the church and its mission, seeing firsthand the power of the Spirit working across the globe. Rev. Barton was part of the NCCCUSA delegation to the twelfth General Assembly of the Christian Conference of Asia in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
