June 21, 1964) is an American college basketball coach. He currently is
an assistant coach for the University of Detroit. He is the former head
coach of Grand Valley State University (1996-97) and Central Michigan
University (1997-2006). He has also been an assistant coach at Michigan.
As a head coach, his career record is 118-166. In 2002-03, Smith led the
Chippewas to the Mid-American Conference title and an appearance in the
2003 NCAA Tournament - the school's first since 1987. There, CMU
recorded a first-round victory. Chris Kaman, one of its players, went on
to play in the National Basketball Association. Smith still holds the
State of Michigan record for the most total career points by a boys high
school player.
