In On Poetry, seven important essays by T. S. Eliot are anthologised, in translation and with commentary by Stefanos Bekatoros, which reveal key aspects of his fruitful trajectory in the field of literary criticism and cover the period from 1919 to 1961.
Beginning with the foundational text entitled "Tradition and the Individual Talent" and concluding with "To Criticize the Critic," the most well-known of the poet's later lectures, the most important milestones in the development of Eliot's critical thought are presented. These focus on the way he re-examined the function of poetry, redefined the very nature of the poetic process, and offered new tools and a range of rhetorical possibilities to future generations of readers and scholars of literature.
Eliot himself regarded his essays as an inseparable part of his writing workshop, emphasising the unbroken unity of his poetic and essayistic production-an idea that reflects his view that literary criticism is inscribed within a broader social, moral, and cultural framework, following the tendencies of each era.
