Since his re-election in 2024, President Donald Trump has made claims to annex both Canada and Greenland, straining relations with both Canadian and Danish governments. However, up until 2022 Denmark and Canada had their own dispute that was resolved peacefully and amicably, an example of how mature and responsible governments should handle conflict.
The Whiskey War Volume 1 is the first in a series that will explain how Canada, Denmark and the United States have been cooperating in defence matters since the Second World War and how this cooperation also secured the defence of North America during the Cold War.
This volume also explains why Greenland was important to both sides during the Second World War, due to its strategic location and the presence of an important mineral essential to produce aircraft. German efforts to establish weather stations on the island resulted in small scale battles in some of the most remote parts of the world.
The Cold War that soon followed made both Greenland and Canadian arctic essential for the protection of North America from possible Soviet air attacks by the installation of early warning radars and basing of interceptors. At the same time, the US built Thule AFB in Northern Greenland for the staging of bombers and reconnaissance aircraft for operations over the USSR.
