Benny was no ordinary hamster. He had golden-brown fur with a patch of white shaped like a star right in the middle of his belly. He was small?smaller than most hamsters at the pet shop?but he had the biggest eyes full of curiosity.

Every evening, after his owner Lily turned off the bedroom light, Benny would sit on top of his wheel and stare through the window. Outside, he could see the glow of the town. The tall lampposts looked like giant candles, and the busy streets were alive with footsteps, laughter, barking, and sometimes the ringing of the great town bell.
