A switch was not always a limber piece of a tree for disciplining an animal. Some words are forced to double duty and that is how an impossible piece of road over a steep and rocky mountain became a passage for wagon trail created to save days of travel for cargo, became a 'switch'. In this case, it switched cargo from one rail line to a destination, avoiding another rail line. This switch happened and few were brave enough, or perhaps foolish enough to tackle it and win.
