It's even rarer that I feel compelled to write a review (never) after reading one, then again, only the second time I took it slowly, savouring both the poetry and text linking the poems together. I laughed out loud and also wept as I turned the pages, which now have several post it notes on my favourites pages. I highly recommend this book to my girlfriends, it will confirm they are "not the only ones to feel the way they do". And to my male friends, to hopefully gain valuable insight into the female psyche. I am thankful that I have never experienced the loss of a child, her premonition and the animal like way Anna Mae responded to her baby son's death, the brutal way the medics, friends and family dealt with her bereavement was heartbreaking and appalling. I pray there is more understanding nowadays, although the unexpected and unexplained death of a precious baby can only ever be devastating I believe. This book deals with both the light and shade aspects of life, there is plenty of humour, especially around relationships, albeit some of the dark variety. I certainly did identify with many of those sorry tales, I particularly enjoyed Your Bus ain't got no Number on and the Internet Dating Profile really made me chuckle. But if I had to choose a favourite poem, mine would be Before you look at what you've Not a reminder to be grateful for all the simple things we have got and sometimes don't even notice. I truly loved this book and hope Anna Mae publishes a follow up to A bit of Spirit and a lot of Spit very soon. Anna Mae's honesty,wit,integrity and all round persistence in life and now on these pages, gives the reader an incredible and fastidiouse look at the occasions in her life that tested and shook her like a rag doll all the while tenacious continuing on.
