Fowzia Younos was born in Kabul City on August 6,
1955, and was raised into a musician family. She is the
grand daughter of Ustad Qassem, the great composer of
Afghanistan and the daughter of Ustad Yusuf and Karima
Qassemi. Fowzia graduated from Lycee Aisha Durani of
Kabul and served in the Ministry of Education. In 1975, she
married Farid Younos who was a student of ethnography and
cultural anthropology. Fowzia continued her education at
the university of Aarhus University in Denmark. She was forced to leave Afghanistan upon
the Soviet invasion with her husband in 1979.
Later, in the United States, she studied in the field of Business Education and graduated
with Master of Science in Education from Virginia Tech in 1986; being the first Afghan
woman who completed a Master degree after mass migration upon the Soviet invasion of
Afghanistan. Fowzia taught for 30 years in different junior colleges including twenty years at
Heald Business College and served as an administrator in Contra Costa County, California
and retired as a Medical Staff Coordinator until her retirement at the age of 70.
