As a wildlife carer for eleven years in the New England area of New South Wales, we see tragic deaths of our kangaroos by vehicle hits, shootings, drought, floods, fires, sickness and so much more. Many incidents leaving young/juveniles at high risk. I decided to retire as a community nurse, but then wondered what to do next, that's when I came across my first joey, Matilda. Since then I have used my skills to care for Macropods (kangaroos) who have come into care for some perilous mishap or another. To be honest, I love it, it's hard, time consuming and most times emotionally and financially draining, it will pull you down but when you have a joey that thrives and grows to adulthood, have their babies and grow their lives, it's so rewarding and uplifting. It's a challenge but we carers of wildlife know their importance and happily do our duty.
