The book of Deuteronomy presents a summary of the laws that Moses proclaimed in several sermons before his death. These should be understood in the context of the renewal of the covenant, at a time when the people were about to cross the Jordan River to take possession of the Promised Land. This reiteration of the law served as a renewed call to the people of Israel to commit themselves to the covenant established by God. Thus, both the blessings of observance of the divine law and the consequences of disobedience are emphasized.
