Zusammenfassung

Naval Engineering: The Principles of Fire Protection is a technical publication for professional fire protection engineers, fire safety engineers, and firefighters to gain an understanding of fire protection applications used on board U.S. Navy vessels. An emphasis has been placed on helping the reader to acquire an overall view of naval fire protection engineering. The reader will learn about the roles and responsibilities the Naval Fire Protection Engineer (Damage Controlman) plays in a ship’s mission and its survivability. Common principles of fire dynamics, extinguishing agents and methods, various fire protection systems and equipment are highlighted, and the principal components of all fire protection systems and their construction are identified and described. This book will enable the reader to increase professional knowledge of the Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF), Halon, Heptafluoropropane (HFP), Carbon Dioxide flooding, water mist, and other miscellaneous systems on board U.S. Navy ships.

Jack Hopson, Jr. is a highly skilled Navy engineer with over 25 years of fire protection engineering experience. At sea, he has served on the USS Hue' City (CG 66), USS Rushmore (LSD 47), and six Mine Countermeasure (MCM) class ships. He trained the crews in fire safety, fire prevention, firefighting procedures, and gas-free engineering. On shore, he served as a firefighting instructor and Occupational Safety and Health Management subject matter expert, and the fire protection engineering (Damage Control) subject matter expert for all Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. He has trained over 90,000 personnel in the principles of fire dynamics, fire suppression, and maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment. Hopson holds a Masters of Science degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Bachelors of Science degree in Fire Service Management, Associates of Applied Science degrees in Marine Engineering and Vocational Technical Education; respectively. He is a certified Associate Safety and Health Manager. He is the U.S. Navy's recipient of the 2018 GEICO Military Service Award for fire safety and fire prevention.
